5 Reasons Why Women Can't Lose Weight

          If you're struggling to lose extra body fat, or if you’re doing everything “right” but just can’t seem to lose weight - or are even gaining it – you may be making these 5 damaging weight loss mistakes.

          Most of us realize just how important it is to avoid extra body fat, but it’s worth repeating that excess abdominal fat - the kind that surrounds your vital organs - is a major indicator of likely heart disease, insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes.

          Thankfully all is not lost. Avoid the 5 Mistakes below – especially Mistake 1 – and you’ll be amazed at how quickly you’ll be tightening your favorite belt and slipping into those skinny clothes.

Mistake 5 – Your Metabolism is Too Slow

          Your metabolic rate determines how many calories your body burns. The lower your rate, the fewer calories your body uses than someone with a higher rate. The difference can be staggering; and can account for up to about 22 pounds of weight gain, according to Victoria Catenacci, MD, a researcher with the University of Colorado at Denver.

          Happily your metabolic rate is not set in stone. A few easy to implement changes to your daily routine can lead to a dramatic increase in your base rate – turning your body into a fat burning machine – even when you’re resting.

Mistake 4 – You’re Focusing on Things that Don’t Matter

          There’s so much confusing advice out there. And one of the biggest challenges is knowing what to focus on. One off the biggest weight loss mistakes you can make is spending valuable time and effort on things that have little impact on your weight.

          Trying to eliminate entire food groups from your diet; testing supplement after supplement looking for that “magic pill” and aiming for “spot reduction” – fat loss on one particular spot of your body are a waste of time. They just leave you confused, frustrated and disheartened. And not one pound lighter.

          You only have so many hours in a day and in reality only a handful of things have any impact on your weight loss. And that’s great news. Because suddenly you can ignore all the hundreds and thousands of other things and instead focus on a short list of things that will genuinely help you lose weight.

Mistake 3 – You Follow Advice Designed for Men

          Women can’t escape the unfortunate fact that men have the weight loss advantage. Genetically, men have more muscle mass than women, and women have a higher percentage of body fat than men. Since muscle tissue burns more calories it means that men have a higher metabolism than women and they burn more calories.

          "If they both run at the same pace for one hour, the woman will burn 500 calories, while the man will burn closer to 700 calories," says Catenacci.

          It’s therefore a terrible mistake for women to follow advice that’s made for men. I guarantee that the majority of the health and wellness tips you’ve tried before were written by men and designed for our bigger, stronger opposite sex. And that can be hugely damaging for women who are trying to lose body fat.

          Put it this way. Imagine filling your car with Diesel fuel instead of Gas? Trust me (I’ve done it!!) it’s not pretty. So why would you do the same for your body. You need to understand what your body needs and focus on a solution that works for you – not some big muscley guy.

Mistake 2 – You’re Doing the Wrong Exercise

          This mistake plain old kills weight loss attempts. It’s in every gym and in every movie out there. The idea that if you need to lose weight you’ve got to do cardio. Whether it’s jogging, walking or spinning around on an eliptical machine, everyone knows that to get fit you need to suffer through long, slow workouts.

          Except it’s plain old wrong advice. Long slow cardio workouts are boring, time-wasting and just don’t work.

          A 2007 Obesity study found that 300 hours of cardio per year helped men and women lose only 5 pounds. So that’s about 50 hours of cardio for each lost pound of body weight. Even worse, according to a study by the University of California at San Francisco’s Human Performance Center, cardio machines lie about how many calories you’re burning: the Treadmill overestimated calories by 13%, while the Elliptical machine by a whopping 42%!

          Thankfully there’s a much better way to burn calories and lose body fat – all while avoiding boring cardio machines.

Mistake 1 - You've Been Tricked into Eating Harmful Food

          The rise of bad foods disguised as “health foods” is the single worst things to happen to women’s fat loss efforts in the last 20 years. “Diet” food, “Light” alternatives and “Low-fat” options surround us every day.

          Unfortunately the reality is that many of these foods are holding back your weight loss efforts. Often these “natural” and “healthy” options are loaded with sodium, GMOs and sugar. - hidden ingredients proven to cause excess weight gain. You need to be able to read between the lines and understand what’s healthy to eat if you want to lose weight. But once you do, the results can be staggering.
